2 Blue Yeti USB Microphone

Recording in any environment can be a complex task, especially if it is vocals. That’s why a mic that is as flexible as possible is a big asset. Blue’s Yeti USB is exactly that and has been designed to be flexible so that it will operate in any environment.

The Yeti will give you a choice of polar patterns, which means you switch between them whenever it is suitable. This gives you a choice of bi-directional or omnidirectional patterns, stereo or cardioid. It has three condenser elements in a tri-capsule array. Audio is recorded in 16-bit/48kHz.

No distortion…

To further put you in total control of what is going on, it has mute and gain controls, and as to be able to have latency-free monitoring there are independent gain controls and an amp for the headphone. A 3.5mm headphone jack is included. Adjusting the mic’s gain control will prevent any distortion or feedback.

The stand is a clever idea and allows you to get it set up in exactly the right position for your performer. Just place it where you want it, then tighten the controls to secure the position. Tabletop design is preferred by some, but if you wish to use a mic stand than just take it off its stand and attach it to your own.

Plug and play…

The USB will give access to your laptop and is compatible with Windows and Mac. No drivers are needed, so it’s just plug and play.

As you can see, this mic is full of features and is a quality product. Well built with good materials and components, it is a great microphone.

At the price, it represents great value and is an ideal mic to record your performers’ vocals for Youtube videos.

3 Zoom H1n Handy Recorder (2018 Model)

This is an interesting microphone by any standards. Zoom’s H1 microphone was a great success, and on the back of that popularity, they have produced an updated version with upgraded features. Here is the H1n.

Zoom has produced a mic that is easy to operate but is full of great ideas and facilities. It has stereo pick up and allows unlimited overdubs to the original recording. The H1 was easy to use, but they have made life even easier with the H1n by adding one-touch buttons. These control the audio settings and are also used for recording and playback.

Great for video work such as Youtube…

If you are recording your performer in darkened lighting, the new 1.25” LCD screen is backlit so you can see what’s going on in any lighting conditions. And A/V sync is made easier with a test tone and slate generators that give you perfect audio and video sync. They have also added self-timer functions and auto-record functions.

The adjustable playback speed is available for notation and transcription. It must be said that the layout is simple and organized. There is an auto-level, and a limiter built in that will give you up to 120dB without distortion.

So many choices…

You have the choice of using your own sound source through the ⅛” stereo mic/line input, or you can use the built-in XY mics for stereo. It should be noted if you want to record, you will require an SD card. This is not included in the package but is sold separately.

As we said at the beginning, this is an interesting piece of kit that will serve you with many functions, including overdubs. For recording to video social media, it is a good tool to use.

Set at a sensible price it is worth looking at, to see if it will give you what you need.

Zoom H1n Handy Recorder (2018 Model)
Our rating:4.2 out of 5 stars (4.2 / 5)

Pros
  • Quality built-in features.
  • Overdubs.
Cons
  • Some may prefer a more standard mic set up.

4 Apogee MIC PLUS

If you are looking for a microphone that is small enough to carry around but still will produce great sounding vocals, then Apogee Mic Plus might be the one you need. It weighs just one pound, and being only seven inches long will comfortably fit in a bag or even your pocket. It might be small in size, but it packs a big punch in performance and enjoys a variety of possible uses.

The Mic Plus has a cardioid capsule, which means it will be most reactive to the sound source aimed straight at it. It is, therefore, ideal for vocalists, but also means that it will filter away any surrounding sounds not required and offer up good unwanted sound rejection. It will serve up 46dB of preamp gain, which is a more than adequate amount. And the sound reproduction is of studio quality.

No latency…

There are several important features that Apogee have included to make this mic efficient and able to produce great results. A headphone blend control will give you latency-free monitoring of performance, and the color LED indicator is of great assistance, especially in a darkened room. It also has an input gain and mute control.

Apogee has designed this mic with some consideration to potential user problems. In that, the USB port and headphone socket are located on the bottom of the mic to ensure they are not accidentally disturbed while in use. The other controls are on the microphone body.

The sound produced and the recordings made for your performers will always be of good quality. This is because of the digital connection and the sample rate, which is 24-bit/96kHz. And it doesn’t need any further set up to operate, just plug in and sing.

What’s in the box?

The package comes with USB cables type A and B and Lightning iOS cable, a tripod and an adapter for a mic stand. Excluded though, is a pop filter which is surprising and may be necessary to record vocals to a decent level. They are, however, very cheap to buy. In fact, there are no real features for dispelling unwanted sounds built-in, so we are assuming that it is for indoor use and they are relying on the cardioid pattern to provide what is necessary.

Apogee MIC PLUS
Our rating:4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)

Pros
  • Well made and sturdy with good features.
  • Digital sound reproduction.
Cons
  • No external noise reduction.

5 Focusrite Scarlett Solo Studio (2nd Gen) USB Audio Interface and Recording Bundle with Pro Tools

We have some experience of using Focusrite equipment. They are very well-known in-home recording circles and indeed in many pro studios. It is basic and simple gear, but it works beautifully and certainly never let us down either in reliability or performance.

With this bundle, they have put together a package that will help solve some of the mysteries of what exactly to buy when you are looking to record some videos for Youtube for the first time.

Maybe you are already aware of all that you will need, but if not, you will need a microphone, a decent one. If it is a condenser mic, you will need a phantom power supply, which could be stand-alone but is normally built into an audio interface. A USB connector or XLR, jack sockets? Anything else???

The answers are all in this great little bundle…

You don’t actually need anything else except maybe the singer. They don’t provide that. It’s all in the box and knowing Focusrite it will all work.

So what exactly do you get in the little package of musical fun and games?

You get a condenser mic, good start, a Scarlett Solo audio interface (with phantom power to run the microphone), an XLR cable, and some headphones. That’s just about all you need.

The preamp will actually not only handle vocals well it will also do a good job with guitars, bass, and keyboards. And, as mentioned, has +48v phantom power.

A one-stop solution…

We would like to make the point that this is very much a starter kit. The microphone will not be the best you can buy but will do the job. The point of this bundle is that for a small outlay you have what you need and the quality is quite good. It is a one-stop solution.

Compatible with Mac OS 10.10 and higher and Windows 7 and higher.

Focusrite Scarlett Solo Studio (2nd Gen) USB Audio Interface and Recording Bundle with Pro Tools
Our rating:4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)

Pros
  • Very good inclusive package.
  • Inexpensive.
Cons
  • Some may want a better quality mic.

6 Rode NT-USB Versatile Studio-Quality USB Cardioid Condenser Microphone

This microphone from Rode is a slight change of approach to what is perceived as there usual manufacturing profile. They are best known for their microphones for use in studios or on stages producing high-quality sounds but through an XLR connection. With this microphone, they are clearly trying to attract an alternative audience because this is a mic with a USB connection. It is a plug straight into your computer microphone. No extra drivers are required.

Built to last…

Looking at it, ignoring the logo, it’s not hard to see who built it. The tough, rugged Rode build is evident, though this mic has a few plastic fittings. Whether that causes problems remain to be seen, but it is not like Rode to build a microphone that is vulnerable.

The NT-USB is a shotgun condenser mic that has been called extremely sensitive. That usually means that it picks up a large amount of surrounding sound, which is surprising for a Shotgun pattern. We think, therefore that where you will record will be vital in getting the best sound from this microphone. Recording karaoke for Youtube from a studio environment would be a good place.

If the ambiance and absence of external noises are good in the room where you record, then you will get real quality. It has a smooth sound but is reminiscent of high-level studio mics with the clarity it delivers. It records at a bit depth and sample rate of 16-bit/48kHz.

Mix it up…

You can monitor the recording or performance through the built-in headphone amplifier. There is also a choice between listening to source or mic input via a mix control. In the package you also get a twenty-foot USB cable, carrying pouch, tripod stand, and a pop filter. It has an optional camera kit specially designed for this mic which can be ordered separately.

This is an excellent microphone from a recognized manufacturer at a very attractive price.

Rode NT-USB Versatile Studio-Quality USB Cardioid Condenser Microphone
Our rating:4.4 out of 5 stars (4.4 / 5)

Pros
  • Some good onboard features.
  • Produces a good sound quality.
Cons
  • Some fittings are plastic, which could make them vulnerable.

7 Audio-Technica AT2035 Cardioid Condenser Microphone Bundle

Audio-Technica’s microphones are usually worth some consideration when you are looking for new kit. They always produce good quality, are well built and priced very competitively. This particular model is a cardioid condenser mic that has a great variety of uses, but is excellent for recording quality vocals.

The cardioid collects the sound from a single source, and so singers will sing straight into them, and the unwanted sounds around the outside will not be heard. This improves the isolation of the sound source and therefore makes it ideal for karaoke singers who you record in a live situation. Most of the ambient noise will be removed, leaving just the vocal. The high level of performance is delivered because it is a large-diaphragm mic producing a natural smooth sound.

Things can get loud!

Built-in are some good features. It is designed to handle a bit of volume and the SPL (Sound Pressure Level), is quite high. And it is fitted with a shock mounting system that will reduce handling noises, and it benefits from an 80hZ high pass filter. It will though require 48v phantom power, being a condenser mic, but the majority of audio interfaces and mixers carry that facility.

It comes with a ten-foot cable with an XLR fitting and a pop filter to rid the sound of any plosives.

One look at it will tell you it’s well made and quite tough and is ideal for a karaoke session either on its stand or handheld.

Nice and quiet…

One issue we would like to mention is that this mic will perform at its absolute best in a studio environment, preferably with a quiet room. It is very sensitive, and if you do not want any background noise that will be the way to use it.

At the price a good option and a contender for the best karaoke mic for a youtube recording.

Audio-Technica AT2035 Cardioid Condenser Microphone Bundle
Our rating:4.6 out of 5 stars (4.6 / 5)

Pros
  • Good features and good sound.
  • Good value for money.
Cons
  • Will need phantom power.

8 AKG Pro Audio C214 Professional Large-Diaphragm Condenser Microphone

If a list was composed of the best microphones ever made, there is a good chance that on that list would be the AKG C414, A microphone that is a legend in many recording studios around the world for its qualities, especially for recording vocals.

Since its establishment in 1949 in Austria, AKG has become synonymous with quality and now they have continued that tradition by manufacturing a more reasonably priced version of the famed C414, the C214. This allows a lot more people to sample the AKG magic.

Some specifications…

It is fitted with a one-inch dual capsule which is one of the components that made the 414 so good. And this results in the 214 having a similar sound. It is, of course, great with instruments as well, but for the purposes of this review, we are thinking about recording Karaoke for Youtube. We think it unlikely that anyone on that platform is using a mic with the reputation, qualities and the pedigree of the 214.

One of the best things about this mic is that it has a 20dB switchable attenuation pad that when coupled with a low cut filter allows the performers to really let rip into their performance without the fear of distortion or overkill on the vocals. They will be perfect every time. The 214 can more than handle what is thrown at it.

Build quality has to be of the highest order, and it is. Gold plated XLR connections ensure excellent lasting connections and no prospect of corrosion. The body of the mic is made from metal, and it has a steel grille as protection on the receiving end. Included is a shock mount for use with a mic stand and a wind filter, all packed away in a metal carrying case.

When AKG decide to build quality, they know how to do it.

Expensive?

Yes, of course, but if you want real quality, then it will cost.

Our rating:4.6 out of 5 stars (4.6 / 5)

Pros
  • A real quality of performance at all levels.
  • Well built and tough with a good case.
Cons
  • The price might scare people.

9 Audio-Technica AT4053B Hypercardioid Condenser Microphone

In previous reviews, when looking at Audio-Technica microphones, we have always said they make a quality product but at a cost-effective price. We have never said that they were not capable of producing a super-quality microphone because here it is. The AT4053B is a very special microphone.

If you want a microphone that meets all the necessary requirements for making a professional sounding vocal recording, then this microphone will give you that. It has been designed with all the acoustic requirements that will deliver that quality.

Hypercardioid…

The AT4053B is shotgun condenser mic that brings a professional sound to a very high level. It utilizes a hyper-cardioid pattern that isolates the target sound source and reduces external noise to a very low level. Hypercardioid is considered more directional than even the common cardioid microphones. And has even less sensitivity on either side, thus allowing the sound source to push through. A direct-couple balanced output will give you a clear signal even under very high output conditions.

Built-in are a number of extra features that assist in giving optimum performance. A high pass filter that is switchable will deal with, and unwanted low-frequency noise and the -10dB pad allows it to be used with louder sound sources. And as there are no transformers in the circuitry, low-frequency is reduced.

Tough but sensitive…

All this, yet it is quite small, compact, and lightweight but with a tough build that is going to take a few knocks. Like many mics of real quality, it is very sensitive, so it needs to be set up correctly to get the best from it. As it is a condenser mic, it will require 48v phantom power. It’s supplied with a stand clamp and a carrying case.

This microphone is pure quality and will give pro level vocal recordings. Of course, it is not the cheapest out there, but quality like this never is. Could all this make it the best of the best Microphones for YouTube? We’ll find out soon…

Our rating:4.8 out of 5 stars (4.8 / 5)
